What Slate is

Slate is business-management and payment software for private tutors: scheduling, billing, and the record-keeping that goes with running a tutoring practice. Slate is not a tutoring marketplace and doesn't introduce tutors to families or vet who a tutor teaches — the tuition arrangement is between the tutor and the family, and Slate is not a party to it. Where the product shows a credential (a DBS status, an insurance date), that reflects information the tutor has provided or had verified through us; a parent should satisfy themselves about who they're engaging independently of what this product displays.

Who these terms are for

These terms are between Slate and the tutor who holds an account. If you're a parent or student using a payment or calendar link a tutor sent you, you don't need an account to do that, and these terms don't govern your relationship with your tutor — their own terms with you do. Using a payment link means you agree to Stripe's terms for that payment; it doesn't make you a party to this agreement.

Your account and your responsibilities

• You're responsible for the accuracy of what you enter — student records, session prices, cancellation policy, and any credential or qualification information you choose to display to parents.
• You're responsible for having a lawful basis to hold the data of the students and families you add, and for your own obligations as a data controller under UK data protection law (see our privacy policy for how the two of us split that responsibility).
• You're responsible for your own tax and business obligations. Slate doesn't file anything on your behalf and doesn't advise you on tax.
• You must be at least 18 to hold a tutor account.

Payments

Payments are processed through Stripe, and you are the merchant of record for every payment your students' families make — the money goes to your Stripe account, not ours, and it never passes through us at any point. You're responsible for the fees your own Stripe account is charged by Stripe for processing.

Any fee Slate itself charges you for the platform will be stated clearly before you're charged, on our pricing page or at signup — this document doesn't set a price because none is fixed here.

What Slate provides

• A platform we maintain and try to keep available, without guaranteeing uninterrupted access — like most software, we can't promise zero downtime, though we take outages seriously and work to fix them quickly.
• Your money never passes through us, at any point, under any feature — this is a structural property of how the product is built, not a policy we could quietly change.
• Any AI-assisted feature we offer never creates a charge, sets a fee, or alters a session on its own — a person always makes that decision. We also don't analyse lesson content for safeguarding concerns; that's a deliberate limit on what this product does.
• A full export of your practice's data, available to you at any time from Settings, so you're never dependent on us to leave.

Acceptable use

Don't use Slate to collect or process data you don't have a lawful basis to hold, to send anything other than genuine communication related to a lesson or payment through the platform's messaging, or to attempt to access another tutor's practice data. We may suspend an account that we reasonably believe is doing any of these.

Ending your account

You can stop using Slate at any time. We'd ask that you export your data first — see above — since we don't guarantee access to it once an account is closed. Financial records already created are kept in line with our standard retention obligations (see our privacy policy) even after an account closes, because an append-only ledger of what was charged and paid isn't something either of us can selectively unwind.

Liability

We provide Slate on an "as available" basis. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for the outcome of the tuition arrangement between you and a family — that relationship, and what happens in it, is yours, not ours. Nothing here limits liability that can't lawfully be limited, such as liability for our own negligence causing personal injury.

Changes to these terms

If we make a material change, we'll tell you before it takes effect rather than let it take you by surprise on a page you don't check often.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
